The Heartland Documents
In 2012, what became known as "The Heartland Documents" were leaked online on several pro-climate change blogs and other publications. The leaked documents consisted of a confidential board meeting memo and agenda detailing the upcoming fundraising and initiative plans for the Heartland Institute for the upcoming year. Since the documents were leaked, scientist Peter Gleick has revealed on his personal blog that he was the source of the distribution of the documents to fellow climate change supporters after the documents were allegedly sent to him from a source inside the Heartland Institute. Since the documents have surfaced, the Heartland Institute has claimed that the memos and documents that were released were fake and not comparable to the original documents the company had on file. In a claim of slander and defamation, the company demanded that bloggers from DeSmogBlog and other major blogging sites remove their commentary and sharing of the documents. Even more scandal has ensued since these blog and publishing organizations have claimed that Heartland's demands were threatening and harsh. One site even claimed to have sent the email/ letter to the FBI, corporate attorneys and other law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, after Heartland revamped and reintroduced their K-12 campaign in 2016, even more of the public sphere has come out to surround the Institute's initiatives and uncover their true motives, most of this public being the teachers targeted by the campaign. Below, we've created a gallery of the documents and any related responses and commentary prevalent to the issue for your own browsing. We encourage you to use the documents as evidence for your own trial of Heartland in which you can judge for yourself whether Heartland's initiatives are pure and honest, or anti-environmental and hypocritical in nature.
